Over a decade ago, Jonathan and I struggled with the decision to get married, frustrated that our American LGBTQ friends were unable to enjoy the privilege afforded to us by Loving v. Virginia. Although we eventually chose to wed, we selected part of the majority decision in Goodridge v. Massachusetts as the only reading in our civil ceremony as a conscious act of support for same-sex marriage.
Fast-forward to today, where Obergefell v. Hodges finally—FINALLY—granted all Americans the right to marry whomever they choose. It’s an enormous, amazing, and marvelous step towards a more perfect union, and to paraphrase the great Martin Luther King, Jr., the arc of the moral universe is long, but it leans towards love.
